In Korean, Tae means "foot", Kwon means "fist", and Do means "discipline" or "way of". In the history of Korea, Taekwondo has been used for military training and conditioning. Taekwondo was not just a physical training. Taekwondo practioners were also taught ethics, Confucian philosophy, and Buddhist morality today, these are reflected in the so-called commandments of modern Taekwondo.
The WTF, formed in 1973, is the only official organization recognized by the Korean government as an international regulating body for Taekwondo. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized WTF in 1980 and proceeded to enter Taekwondo as an official Demonstration Sport for the 1988 Olympics. In 2000, Taekwondo became an official competition sport in the Sydney Olympics.
